- Football is the most popular and widely played sport in the world, and its social, cultural, and political relevance is unparalleled. Politics and sport have always been closely intertwined, and given football’s central role in many societies, this connection is particularly pronounced. Political actors routinely use football for symbolic, diplomatic, or strategic purposes, while football itself shapes political identities, national narratives, and even political conflicts. Understanding these dynamics is essential for grasping the broader political significance of sport. This course provides an introduction to the key intersections between football and politics from a comparative and historical perspective. Students will explore how football influences political processes, how political systems engage with and instrumentalize football, and how issues such as nationalism, identity, social movements, globalization, and soft power manifest through the game.

- Critical political thought is caught in a double-bind vis-à-vis the state: On the one hand, the state has historically been the source of racial, economic and gender violence and repression. And yet, emancipatory strategies contend with the state to promote justice and equality through progressive policy-making and good governance in the economic, political and social spheres. Even as the state is known to perpetuate racist, sexist and capitalist ideologies, the hope is that the state can function as a site of redress towards racial, gender and economic equality.
In this class, we will engage with liberal, republican, Marxist, feminist, poststructuralist, queer and postcolonial theories of the state to address these ambivalences and understand how the state reinforces but also mitigates global inequality and injustice.

- What are international institutions? Why are international institutions established, and with what expectations? What role do international institutions play in world politics? How and why have institutions changed over time? What criteria can be usefully applied to evaluate and critique international institutions? The course examines theories of institutionalism in international relations and their intellectual roots; the emergence, consolidation, and transformation of individual international institutions; their impact on state and intergovernmental actors; and their pathologies, including their failures. It also addresses current issues in international cooperation, such as the argument that institutional landscapes are becoming increasingly fragmented and complex in policy areas like climate, migration, humanitarian aid, health, and food security. Finally, the lecture discusses current challenges facing international institutions, such as funding and legitimacy crises; shifts in power and “emerging powers”; personnel policy; politicization and populism; and the growing influence of non-state actors and their networks. In the accompanying seminar (see below), these topics are explored in greater depth and supplemented with the methodological tools needed to study international institutions.
