When The Cuckoo’s Calling was published in 2013 under the name Robert Galbraith, it received a decidedly lukewarm response. Reviews were scarce, and critics were divided on whether its protagonist – Cormoran Strike, a one-legged, down-on-his-luck, curmudgeonly private detective – was a refreshing take on the genre or merely an overly familiar trope. On the brink of being relegated to the bargain bin, the novel became an overnight bestseller when its true author was revealed to be J.K.R owling who had – once again – resorted to using a pseudonym aiming to distance herself from her Harry Potter fame and to navigate a genre traditionally dominated by male authors.
In this seminar, we will critically examine British detective fiction, exploring excerpts from authors such as Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie. We will analyse the genre’s conventions and consider how The Cuckoo’s Calling interacts with and challenges these traditions. We will also explore broader questions of authorship, the "Death of the Author", and transformative works as a form of "writing back." Additionally, we will analyse how the novel addresses themes of nationality, gender, age, class, ethnicity, and sexuality. - Literatur

- This course deals with basic and advanced grammar concepts and targets the particular problems foreigners in general and Germans in particular commonly have with English grammar. This course builds on the knowledge of grammar gained at school, but whereas “Abitur” classes often concentrate on communicative skills, this university course will focus on accuracy and knowledge of grammatical structures. Although students have encountered and practised most aspects of English grammar at school, many do not control them well. Using a contrastive approach, this class will address the English verb system, the peculiarities of nouns and their determiners, part-of-speech analysis, parsing, gerunds vs. infinitives, collocations, phrasal verbs, types of subordinate clauses, modal verbs, word order (inversion etc), and adjective vs. adverb problems. Exercises will include: gap-filling, transformations, error correction, translation and sentence analysis. Since the philosophy of the class is partly based on a contrastive approach, translation from German into English will also play a role. Reference books will be recommended in class. This survey lecture course provides an overview of US cultural history from the early European colonization of North America to recent moments in a United States that will be considered in transnational perspective. It heightens an understanding of the dynamics of American cultural history by way of focusing on key texts that have contributed to shaping an understanding of it. The lecture takes canonical and uncanonized texts as points of departure for a survey of crucial periods, places, people, and issues in American cultural history, highlighting how these texts generate knowledge about freedom and equality, among other aspects, and how they shape various American counter/publics before and during the process of nation building. It also reflects on the medial and discursive forces that constitute these crucial American texts and shape effects on their times and beyond.

- The aims of this course are to raise awareness of lexical range and lexical variety (geographical, stylistic), to identify recurring lexical problem areas of German speakers of English (as far as practicable also of speakers of English with mother-tongues other than English), to improve personal performance in appropriateness, precision and range of lexical expression, to increase familiarity with deduction techniques, to provide some theoretical information on the structure of (English) vocabulary as far as of practical help, and to inform students about learning materials and techniques. In the course, students work on common problematic lexical areas, extract vocabulary (words, word groups) from texts, establish personal vocabulary lists, practise using dictionaries and thesauri, work out word fields, identify and use word formation processes, practise variations in range and variety of written and oral expression, and experiment with different learning techniques. - This course should be taken by all year 2 State Exam (Sekundarstufe) students before their teaching practice (SPÜ). This course will concentrate on learning and practising the language needed for conducting lessons in English. Half of the seminars will focus on the language required for discussing topics like equipment, classroom surroundings, the organisation of class activities, correcting language errors, explaining new words, discipline, games, technical apparatus etc. Homework exercises aim to reinforce and practise the vocabulary and structures presented. The other half of the seminar will involve a simulation whereby the seminar group acts as a school class and two or three students take over, in turns, the role of teacher and present a teaching unit from the school curriculum, devising their own methods and materials. This is then followed by a discussion of the presentation. The students acting as the teacher are required to work as a team and must also discuss their proposals with the course instructor before giving their presentation. RPTE-Survey represents one of the two courses offered in the module RPTE (Reflected Practice of Teaching English). In combination with the course RPTE-Lessons it develops the competences required for the subsequent module RPTE-SPÜ.
RPTE-Survey provides an insight into the variable factors and processes involved in learning/teaching English as a foreign language (EFL). Participants are encouraged to reflect on how these can be considered/ controlled in EFL classes in order to facilitate the development of intercultural communicative competence. Task-based assignments such as the analysis and the planning of teaching units on the basis of current textbooks will support the integration of theoretical with practical perspectives.

The exam RPTE-Portfolio requires the previous completion of RPTE-Survey and RPTE-Lessons as it integrates tasks related to both RPTE courses.

- We recommend that students take this Listening and Speaking course before their period of residence in an English-speaking country. This course aims firstly to familiarise students with naturally spoken English and a variety of accents, thereby improving listening comprehension skills; secondly we aim to improve students' own general speaking skills by encouraging students to adopt aspects of what they hear from the listening exercises into their own speaking. Spoken language will be analysed in detail, especially those aspects which hinder comprehension e.g. contractions, linking, etc. The skills and knowledge practised and gained in Year 1 Pronunciation and Intonation will be further developed and refined. Students will also practise the rhetorical skills necessary in giving presentations and short talks. This part of the course should help students give better papers in other seminars. We shall also deal with grammatical problems as they occur. There will be two main tests: (1) a test in listening skills in the form of a written exam, and (2) a speaking test at the end of the semester. - This course is to be taken by year 2 B.A. students and year 3 B.Ed. and Lehramt students. Year 2 B.Ed. and Lehramt students may also take this course in year 2 if places are available. This course will teach and practise various types of written tasks and texts. Although it will focus primarily on argumentative writing (i.e. presenting arguments), it will also deal with descriptive as well as expository writing (i.e. explaining, describing, and giving information), formal letters, summaries, CVs/resumes, as well as some translation from German into English. Students may be required to give a short presentation on a controversial topic chosen at random. This exercise in weighing up and presenting arguments and counter-arguments aims to improve the organisation of ideas in both formal writing and presentations in university and work situations. This course is specifically designed for the old B.A. (till SS 2013) and B.Ed. courses, which are running out. State Exam and candidates on the new B.A. programme (from WS 2013) can also take this course as an option.
The aim of this course is to raise familiarity with a range of text types, including academic texts, and to practise efficient reading techniques. As reading constitutes a major part of the studies, we hope that this course will support students in their academic careers. The course will build on the skills and knowledge gained in the Grammar and the Vocabulary courses. Students will be given both intensive assignments (shorter texts and extracts) as well as an extensive reading assignment (a whole novel).

APTE-Units aims at developing your competence of planning, implementing, analysing and reflecting on complex EFL units tailored to the needs and potentials of language learners at different types of school. To give you comprehensive support at these stages, the course is divided into three successive phases centering around your practical teaching experience 'Schulpraktikum im Bock'(SPB):
Phase 1 (pre-SPB) precedes your SPB and allows you to cooperate to plan, analyze and reflect on complex EFL units.
Phase 2 (while-SPB) accompanies your SPB activities and invites you to share, analyse and reflect on both your observations and teaching experiences with a focus on good practice.
Phase 3 (post-SPB) follows up your SPB and provides you with the opportunity to share your analysis and reflection of key teaching experiences.
In all three phases, a special focus will be on supporting learners in their individual learning processes in a task-based environment en route to intercultural communicative competence - taking advantage of the potential of (digital) media, developing intercultural citizenship and considering education for sustained development.

The module APTE includes the mandatory courses APTE-Units (phases 1+2+3), APTE-SPB and APTE-Classroom English as well as the following elective courses (of which you select one): APTE-Individualized Teaching, APTE-Virtual Teaching, APTE-Cross-Curricular Teaching, APTE-Teaching Linguistic Means.
The course 'APTE-Virtual Teaching' deals with ways and techniques to include virtual teaching in the classroom taking into consideration different school forms. The focus will, among others, be on computer- and web-based learning, digital resources for EFL teachers, interactive teaching tools, learning management systems, collaborative learning and supporting students in distance learning. A variety of resources will be utilized for creating online and classroom units in the context of education for sustainable development.
The Prüfungsleistung APTE-Komplexe Leistung consists of a portfolio which integrates tasks related to all mandatory APTE courses and to your selected elective course. - Literatur

Effective methods of teaching linguistic means will be discussed with an emphasis on activities and learning strategies and with regard to lesson and unit planning models.

This course (APTE-Teaching Literature) deals with ways and methods of planning, analyzing and reflecting on complex EFL units dealing with literary texts.
RELATED MODULES
This course can be studied and credited either in the context of the module Advanced Practice of Teaching English (APTE) (option 1) or in your supplementary studies ("Ergänzungsbereich") (option 2).
Option 1: In the context of the module APTE, this course represents one of the elective courses offered, one of which must be chosen: APTE-Individualized Teaching, APTE-Virtual Teaching, APTE-Teaching Linguistic Means, APTE-Cross-Curricular Teaching, APTE-Teaching Literature. Apart from the elective courses, the module APTE includes the mandatory courses APTE-Units (phases 1/2/3: pre/while/post-SPB), APTE-SPB and APTE-Classroom English. Note: In the context of the APTE module, each of the elective courses covers only 1 SWS.
Option 2 (SO 2012-13): In the context of your supplementary studies ("Ergänzungsstudien"), this course is one of four courses specifically tailored to the needs of TEFL students and offered in the context of the following modules: Grundschule: EGS-SEGS1; Oberschule EGS-SEOS-1/2/3; Gymnasium: EGS-SEGY-1/2/3; Berufsbildende Schulen: EGS-SEBS-1/2/3 (1 SWS, 2 LP, Projektarbeit, graded). The courses are: Individualized Teaching, Virtual Teaching, Teaching Linguistic Means, Cross-Curricular Teaching and Teaching Literature. You can find them in the catalogue ("Katalog Ergänzungsstudien") and select one or more of them. Note: In the context of "Ergänzungsstudien" according to SO 2012-13, each of the elective courses covers only 1 SWS.
Option 2 (SO 2023-24): In the context of supplementary studies ("Ergänzungsstudien"), this course represents one of the four courses offered in the context of the module EGS-SEGY/BS/OS/GS-SB-1 (“Vertiefte bildungswissenschaftliche und fachdidaktische Aspekte“. To complete the module, two of the following courses need to be selected: APTE-Individualized Teaching, APTE-Virtual Teaching, APTE-Teaching Linguistic Means, APTE-Cross-Curricular Teaching, APTE-Teaching Literature. In the catalogue ("Katalog Ergänzungsstudien") you can find this module, which is specifically tailored to the needs of TEFL students, under the title "Core Aspects of Teaching English in Depth" (4 SWS, 5 LP, Komplexe Leistung, graded). Note: In the context of the "Ergänzungsstudien" according to SO 2021-22, each of the elective courses covers 2 SWS - and the whole module 4 SWS.
EXAM
if studied in the APTE module according to option 1: The Prüfungsleistung APTE-Portfolio (in SO 2023-24: Komplexe Leistung) integrates tasks related to all APTE courses mentioned above.
if studied in "Ergänzungsstudien" according to option 2 (SO 2012-13): You will complete a "Projektarbeit" in each of your selected courses.
if studied in "Ergänzungsstudien" according to option 2 (SO 2023-24): You will complete a "Projektarbeit" in each of the two selected courses. Both "Projektarbeiten" will form a "Komplexe Leistung".
ORGANISATION
Participants need to enrol via OPAL (see Einschreibung). They will decide at the beginning of the course whether they want to study it according to option 1 (APTE module) or option 2 ("Ergänzungsstudien": either SO 2012-13 or SO 2021-22). Crediting according to both options at the same time is not possible, of course!

This course is specifically designed for the old B.A. (till SS 2013) and B.Ed. courses, which are running out. State Exam and candidates on the new B.A. programme (from WS 2013) can also take this course as an option.
The aim of this course is to raise familiarity with a range of text types, including academic texts, and to practise efficient reading techniques. As reading constitutes a major part of the studies, we hope that this course will support students in their academic careers. The course will build on the skills and knowledge gained in the Grammar and the Vocabulary courses. Students will be given both intensive assignments (shorter texts and extracts) as well as an extensive reading assignment (a whole novel).

This survey lecture course provides an overview of US cultural history from the early European colonization of North America to recent moments in a United States that will be considered in transnational perspective. It heightens an understanding of the dynamics of American cultural history by way of focusing on key texts that have contributed to shaping an understanding of it. The lecture takes canonical and uncanonized texts as points of departure for a survey of crucial periods, places, people, and issues in American cultural history, highlighting how these texts generate knowledge about freedom and equality, among other aspects, and how they shape various American counter/publics before and during the process of nation building. It also reflects on the medial and discursive forces that constitute these crucial American texts and shape effects on their times and beyond.
